Mommy skills translate to the office

As a Self-Made Mom, I’m a strong believer that if you are raising children, you have what it takes to be in a position of power at work.  You’re in charge of budgets, you must know how to plan ahead, and, most importantly, you are responsible for the well-being and livelihood of another person. If this doesn’t prepare you for advancement at work or getting back to your career, I don’t know what does.

A venerable news source, The New York Times, agrees. Yesterday’s Sunday Business section ran a column by Kelly Holland which argues that raising children helps women and men “develop skills that are central to successful management.”  Holland also writes that raising children teaches you quick-decision making, negotiating, motivation and praise – skills all welcomed in the office.

In theory, this should make it easier for SAHMs and SAHDs to get back in the workforce when they’re ready.  It should also translate into more opportunities and advancement for those parents currently in the workforce trying to get ahead.

Only time will tell if the education we all get at home raising children will pay off at work.  The investment in it is sure worth it, though, either way.
