I made a bloo-boo

posted in Blogging Rants, Don\'t Know What to Make of This |

heartbandaid.jpgMy foray into the blogosphere, much like motherhood, has not been without its injuries.  They are surface injuries – minor scrapes and scratches – but if I don’t stop my self-destructive ways, I could get myself into trouble.

I made a bloo-boo.  Well several, actually.

It started with the fact that I act before I think, am indecisive and constantly second guess myself.  So once I started a blog, because I wanted to document my adventures in motherhood, I decided I didn’t like the name I picked.  So I decided to create this new blog instead, after only 2 months.  Not a big deal, but a bloo-boo nonetheless.  Lesson learned- think it all through before you put yourself out there. It’s hard to change yourself on the world-wide web.

Then I thought it’d be funny to write an exaggerated story of something that happened in one of my play groups.  The foundation was true, but my overly hurt feelings about the situation were not.  My NMF read it and got upset that I wasn’t honest with her from the start.  I had to backtrack. Bloo-boo number two: don’t exaggerate even if it makes your story funnier.

Then I made several bloo-boos as I tried to promote my new site.  I commented 3 times accidentally on the popular blog Motherhood Uncensored.  I thought I was getting error messages.  I wasn’t, I was just being a spaz.  I misread Marc’s posting about his wife’s experience being preggo on the “el.”  He had to correct me.  And then, I noticed someone removed their incoming link to my blog.  Did they make a bloo-boo, or did they just not want to be associated with me?  Am I that bad?

So here’s the bottom line that I’ve learned: you’re gonna get hurt and make mistakes along the way, but boo-boos on the blogosphere are a lot more visible than a scratch on your leg.

Hey, no worries! In the six months since I’ve had a blog, I’ve been yelled at, link-removed, corrected, and advised on appropriate content. Nothing extreme, but basically there are tons of folks out there all with their own perception of what should be on a blog. Also, I’ve noticed that the person most likely to read your post (thanks to technorati and other link-tracking devices) is the very person that you are talking about! I have certainly edited posts, corrected posts in a brand new post, and have seen plenty of other blogs do the same.

By the way, the link-removal is a funny issue that another blog was discussing too. We (well me and this other blogger) don’t generally start blogs for the purpose of getting linked. But when we do, we get excited, and then equally depressed when we are de-linked. It’s like losing the friend that we never knew we had. But then someone else links to us, and we get excited again.

I don’t currently have a “parenting blog” category on my sidebar, but if I start one, I’ll be sure to include you!

Eh, I wouldn’t worry a whole lot about it. People link and unlink all the time for lots of reasons.

Just read your “About Me” and I bleed Maize and Blue too. Both DH and I are alums. Rose Bowl…typical outcome for the Maize and Blue….

I just got criticized by someone on their blog b/c in one of my posts I shared that I did not like being called “honey”, “sweetie”, etc. by strangers… different strokes for different folks i guess. no harm done though, he apologized for the post on his blog.
