A diversion from PowerPoint: Fun reading for working moms

I don’t have time to read.  Ok, well that is not entirely true.  Because I was on a plane for a total of 10 hours this week flying to and from Los Angeles, I got a lot of reading done.  (Sorry, book club, I couldn’t bring myself to dig into this month’s book.  I’m sure it’s great, but my mom-fried brain can’t do politics at the moment.)  Without a very long plane flight in my future, however, I feel like I never have time to read anything other than The Going to Bed Book. Oh yeah, and PowerPoint presentations.

peeinginpeace.gifBut this week, I read two “mommy lit” books and got wind of a couple other seemingly “must-reads.”  Seems like everyone is writing a book these days. (Cha-ching?). First, on the way to L.A. I pored over Beth Feldman and Yvette Corporan’s book aptly titled, Peeing in Peace.  Since I was going to meet Beth soon, I figured I’d better see what she was all about (she’s funny!)  The book tells the real-life tales of being a working mom.  If you’ve ever smiled while walking into your office because you know you’ll at least get to go to the bathroom by yourself today, this book’s for you.

sippycups.jpgThe second book I read was Stefanie Wilder-Taylor’s Sippy Cups Are Not For Chardonnay: And Other Things I Had to Learn as a New Mom. Now, I don’t know Stefanie from Adam, but after seeing her on the Today show, and reading this book I REALLY want to meet her.  (Stefanie, if you’re out there and happen to read this, I too, have suffered through Mommy & Me. We all do.)  She’s so right on about what it’s like to be a new mom without all the pithy advice and preachy tone.

I also heard this week about a book that might interest some of you closet mama writers out there. Christina Katz just came out with her book, Writer Mama, which gives advice on how to raise a writing career alongside your kids.  Right up my alley.

Finally, writer Nick Katsoris pinged me to plug his new children’s book, Growing Up With Loukoumi, and well, how could I resist? The book and accompanying CD is about the character Loukoumi the lamb, and teaches children “that they can be anything they want to in life through hard work and dedication.” The narrated CD features celebs Gloria Gaynor, Olympia Dukakis, and American Idol heartthrob Constantine Maroulis! Best of all Katsoris is donating $2 from every sale to benefit a national children’s charity.

Well, I think that’s enough to keep you busy for the next few months.  I’m off to watch Sunday’s episode of Desperate Housewives.  What? You actually thought I was going to go off and read? Ha!

I heard Beth Feldman on the Manic Mommies podcast and I think I scared folks on the El as I laughed out loud. Anyway, Peeing in Peace is on my growing list of books to read.

Your fellow Chicago Mommy,
Alma

P.S. I know some folks at Edelman from my work on Equal last year.

Thanks for the book recommendations. Peeing in Peace sounds like my kind of book!

Ahhhh, reading. I miss reading. I must squeeze in some non-existent spare time for books again.
