I thought packing up your office was supposed to be a cathartic experience.  I went into the task of cleaning up mine to move to another one (with a better view) wondering what kinds of trinkets and treasures I’d uncover. For other moves I’ve done, like to a new apartment or different city, packing has always been about discovering things forgotten. An old diary. A funny photo. Ratty old t-shirts.
But as I found out earlier this week, unfortunately, all I really had to show for my last three years of work was a lot of junk. And a scary obsession with hygiene.Â
I found books that probably shouldn’t have been buried under paper and folders.
I hope I’m not getting rated on my office organization abilities.
I discovered I have a fetish for mugs.Â
Do you want some dust in your tea?
I realized I had missed opportunities.
A research folder about blogs from 2003. I could have been a bazillionaire by now.
I discovered I’m really not all that tech savvy.
Who uses a handspring anymore?
And came to the conclusion that I’d rather be clean and well-medicated than smart. Seriously, who has a whole drawer dedicated to toiletries?
Just in case CVS closes at 4 p.m.
Please tell me you all have something more exciting sitting around in your office.Â

Oh, that is too funny. Especially about the blogs back in 2003! Oh man.
Steph
My office is almost like a second home, so I have a lot of stuff in here. OMG, do I have a lot of stuff.
I have an old mug I used for coffee that was ten years old when I packed up and moved home. It was a mug advertising a software program we developed in 1993 and I could not bear to part with it. Still have it today…. although it’s a change collector now! lol
Those darn mugs keep multiplying! They should ban mug gifts from now on! I have soooo freakin much in my office, but don’t want to hurt anybody so I end up leaving it there. uuurgh!
I’ve got a great t-shirt that reads “Revisions are my life”
I’m an editor for a group of magazines and I’m always updating and changing things for the magazines.
I just moved offices about 6 weeks ago as well. Also to one with a view…
ok, so I have a window. I can totally relate. I threw away program cds that
were from 2002 (pretty sure I had a Handspring in there). Apparently I have
some need to collect electrical cords. I can connect or charge anything out there.
We are moving to a new building next week and (gasp) there are no offices. I’ve decided to go sterile and brought all but one family picture home.
Oh, and I have a drawer of cleaners, wipes, bandaids, etc. too
Ugh! I always have papers covering my desk in my home office. An 8 year-old boy who was visiting ona playdate said to me, “My mom just told me about this great new invention.
They’re called piles. Do you want me to help you make some?”
At work I’m much better, I do have growing collection of snacks, though. And thanks to a recent blog review, a handy little pump bottle of Germ-X.
