My daughter's first birthday is just around the corner and I am aiming for the middle ground. We are having the party at home, which I am seriously thinking about kicking myself for - we have decided to make it a habit to rent a venue for my son's parties after he was one.

But one problem I just noticed? My poor second child... all the guests seem to be about 3-4 years old, save for two that are her age. This is turning into my son's 3 years 8 months birthday party... I am sure he will be the one blowing out the candle too.

Forgot to say on Chicago Moms blog -- happy birthday to your little one! My little one just turned five (we did Build-A-Bear. Great party. Low stress. Lots of moula.) It goes so fast!

Ah, and that would assume that I actually have a backyard. :) Sounds very strategic on your part, though.

We've done the giant party and the low-key party. I prefer somewhere in the middle.

This year I'm all about the backyard party. Jumpy House, Popcorn machine, and no kids inside unless they need to pee. I just plan on hosing down the back (including the kids) when it is all over.

The parties. That is what having a kid is all about! No, I know. Not really. I just don't have kids
yet but I keep getting excited about the fun parties I will throw for my friends and I but of course
under the guise that it's for my child. They, they'll turn 5 and it will be all Chucky Cheese and no
time to talk because everyone is screaming, "Tokens! Tokens! I want tokens!" Good God! No kids for me!
Have fun though! :)

I agree that I don't want 20 (er, make that 30) greasy-fingered little people touching the walls and carpets in my home, so I kept my guest list small (immediate family and a few young cousins) at my daughter's second birthday. And while I didn't rent out party space or hire outside entertainment, I did spend a great deal of time and attention to detail in organizing her very cute "polka dot party" (hey, every party does have to have a theme!). My son is now 5 and for the first time I'm going to have to deal with inviting classmates, so we're definitely going to rent out space. I don't want the hassle and the potential damage to my house. So much less stress to do it at a party venue! And even though Jewel does do a yummy sheet cake, I do go over the top with baking cakes. My son's last cake was a 3-D model pirate ship complete with edible canons and little pirates...Argh, matey. Happy Birthday to yours.
